Blood Curse - Scaring this Summer

Hello, everyone. This is Tsubasa Inaba, the US Producer for Siren: Blood Curse. This title was just announced last Friday at E3 Judge’s Day, and was very well received. Siren: Blood Curse is due out this summer in North America, on the PSN.

I wanted to share with you the Siren: Blood Curse debut trailer that we’ve created for North America.
We hope you like it. The trailer gives you a hint of the mystery and might prepare you for the goosebumps you’ll get from the final piece.

An American TV crew arrives in Japan to shoot a documentary piece on the legend of this Japanese village that supposedly disappeared 30 years ago. Upon arrival, they immediately find themselves wrapped up in the horror of this mysterious curse that haunts the village. The game lets you play seven different characters throughout the story, and features the unique “sight jack” system.

“Sight jack” gives you the ability to see from the point of view of the Shibito (living dead creatures, not exactly like zombies) or your fellow companions. At times you’ll be using sight jack to sneak around in the shadows, trying not to be seen by the Shibito. At other times, you’ll have no choice but to stand and fight, in which case there are over 50 weapons to use against them.

I’m very excited about this game, even though I find it pretty scary to be honest (especially playing in a dark room!). Everything about this game, from horror, mysterious story line, cinematics, game structure, keeps the players hanging, and wanting to come back for more.

Tabula Rasa’s Alpha Pack Calls It Quits

Citing reasons ranging from interest in other MMOs to disappointment in Tabula Rasa’s current lackluster status, eminent TR player group Alpha Pack has retired from the game.

Far from a simple MMO guild, the Alpha Pack served as a liaison between players and the game’s developers. Many of the game’s most successful changes and additions were the direct result of Alpha Pack’s involvement.

“The
program had potential, but much like Tabula Rasa itself, that potential
went unrealized,” wrote a former Alpha Pack member on IGN’s Tabula Rasa Vault.

Reasons for the group’s departure were understandably diplomatic, though one can’t help but notice a possible correlation between yesterday’s massively successful Age of Conan launch and this exodus of hardcore MMO fans from their prior game of choice.

Releases Wire

GearHead2 0.502

GearHead2 version 0.502 has just been released. In case you don’tknow, GearHead is a Sunrise-inspired scifi roguelike CRPG featuring giant robots.

POWDER 105

My time in Japan prevented me from making a release (I had turned off two of the machines I need to build on), but it didn’t prevent me from working on POWDER. There are lots of various changes including new items and skills. There is also a new 32×32 tileset that you can find in the artpack thanks to Ibson the Grey.

Privateer 0.3.2.

The most important change in this release is the character combat system. You can now attack characters on bases, and you have an inventory and health.

Incursion 0.6.9a

Just wanted to let people know that there’s been a new release of Incursion

LambdaRogue 0.3.0.1

Finally it’s done, the next milestone in LambdaRogue development has been released.

CryptRover 1.0

Released about 3 months after the 7drl version, it contains a couple of new features and mainly bug fixes and balance tweaks. However, the game remains simple, and that is by design.

Dr. Mario prescribes Family Table Tennis for WiiWare

Here we are in the third week of WiiWare and we still feel like we aren’t able to equip you guys and gals properly for your buying decisions. We feel pretty confident about Dr. Mario, if you aren’t burnt out on it, but we have literally no clue about Family Table Tennis. Let us know in the comments if you give either one a spin.

Dr. Mario Online Rx (Nintendo, 1-4 players, 1,000 Wii Points): It’s the classic Dr. Mario that you ~~have played a thousand times~~ love, wherein an Italian plumber tosses more pills then Amy Winehouse to practice medicine completely without a license. But Nintendo has added new multiplayer modes, including a Friend Battle Demo that you can play with someone who doesn’t own the game.

Family Table Tennis (Aksys Games, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points): You can probably figure out what to expect here. It’s table tennis (though we don’t know if it uses the Wiimote’s motion sensing). What we’d like to bring up is this line from the press release: “Just like a real family, choose your character from a cast of four, which includes Daddy, Mommy, Sarah and Billy.” What sort of Cold War-era ethics are you trying to impose on our families, Nintendo? Even more sinister is the release’s insistence that the game includes “four table tennis-tastic stages.” Table tennis-tastic? We don’t care what anyone tells you, that collection of words and punctuation means nothing.

Epic Acquires Undertow Makers Chair

Epic Games, makers of Gears of War and the Unreal Engine, announced today that they have acquired game developer Chair Entertainment.

Chair is the creator of Undertow for Xbox Live Arcade (pictured) as well as two upcoming projects with science fiction writer Orson Scott Card, based around his books Empire and Ender’s Game.

The game developer announced in 2007 that it would use Epic’s Unreal Engine exclusively for all of its future projects.

Rumor: Resident Evil 5 features co-op and cover system

ShackNews reports that a Resident Evil 5 preview, originally posted by GamesRadar, stated the game would feature online co-op throughout the campaign and that a cover system had been added to the franchise. Sadly, we can’t report on this information directly from GamesRadar because the article has been removed. We blame the Umbrella Corporation. We always blame the Umbrella Corporation.

The preview allegedly revealed that there would be also be a dodge mechanic (using the right analog stick), a mercenary mini-game and a challenge mode. In the co-op campaign, players would be able to drop in and out at any time, with the AI taking over when there’s no pesky human with yummy brains to control the second character. RE5 is expected sometime before the next decade and follows the possibly racist Chris Redfield as he indiscriminately kills all of zombie-kind between him and his goal.

10 Year Old Deemed Fat By Wii Fit

Yet another video game is being bashed for its negative influence on children and potential long term harm. It’s not GTA IV, it’s not Bully, it’s…Wii Fit.

A 10-year old English girl, is one of the few lucky (or so her parents thought) folks to have the chance to play around with Wii Fit, the exercise-based game recently released Nintendo and next to impossible to get a-hold of. The game regularly assesses your Body Mass Index (BMI), taking into account age, height and weight to provide a numeric measure that falls into a body mass category. Apparently the girl was told by the game that she was “fat”. Her stepfather isn’t happy with the label at all, and suggested that it has already negatively impacted his daughter’s self-esteem and self-image. Now, as a girl just about to enter the topsy-turvy world of prepubescent life, being told by strangers, even virtual ones, that you’re overweight could lead to a whole host of self-confidence issues that extend much beyond the immediate impact. I understand the concern.

Nintendo has completely sidestepped calls by the National Obesity Forum and the girl’s parents to do something about the issue by simply stating that:

“Wii Fit is still capable of measuring the BMI for people aged between two and 20 but the resulting figures may not be entirely accurate for younger age groups due to varying levels of development.”

So unless you’re over 20, you’re kind of playing a guessing game with your own results, which is highly amusing considering that most of the advertising for the game depicts whole families, including young children, enjoying the benefits and having a ball doing so. If it’s inaccurate for those age groups, then Wii Fit becomes less of a measuring tool and more of a straight game…a game which frankly would be awfully boring and pointless with no reward system based on performance improvement.
