A new build for [dR] typically takes shape as a basic team build idea, and then individual players fill in the specific player builds. All of [dR]’s players are experts in their roles, so there is considerable individual effort. The players tweak their own skillbars to synergize with the overall concept of the team build. Similarly, [dR] does not have one overall strategy caller in a match, instead since everyone knows their role and how it fits into the overall strategy and they act and play accordingly. Again, the fact that all members have previously led guilds pays dividends. In order for this strategy to be effective, the team must play builds together frequently. Sometimes if they need a quick and dirty proof-of-concept test for a new build, they may use a smurf to play on and get quick matches, but normally they just play on their main guild.

[dR] pays close attention to skill changes and estimates the impact they will have on the metagame. If they think skills are going to be nerfed before the next mAT, they stop using them in ladder play and daily ATs. Instead they attempt to predict where the metagame will shift, and stay ahead of it as much as possible. They pay close attention to the map rotation for the ATs, make builds that are strong for each map, and practice the a lot. By the time the mAT rolls around, they usually have four or five builds designed and practiced, along with modifications for each designed for specific opponents, based on the map rotation and current metagame. If a build does not work on a particular map, they feel it is worthless and won’t practice it further.

Prior to the mAT they post builds on their forums and do practice runs. [dR] engages in lots of strategy and build discussion, and they attempt to get good match-ups to test builds and strategies. Usually they can only really test in daily ATs or in scrimmages in order to get sufficient quality competition. What they find is that top guilds are often more willing to scrimmage before mAT for the same reason.

There’s more to explore in Hellgate: London, of course — we’ve only been able to play the single-player campaign so far — but with each level we pass through and every identical demon battle, the constant diet of Doritos is starting to wear thin. Perhaps multiplayer will offer more charms, but as of this writing, the servers just went online. Based on our experience in the beta, multiplayer looks like more of the same because the nature of the combat doesn’t seem to be conducive to the kind of fun teamwork to be found in a standard MMO or even a team-based shooter. The developers are promising to add all kinds of new content to the game for subscribers, but at launch, subscription benefits are restricted to a few minor things like additional item storage and a hardcore mode that restricts a character to one life. It’s roughly the gaming equivalent of going from nacho cheese to spicy nacho cheese. The more we play the game, however,the more it begins to feel like the very randomness that makes the game compelling and addictive also adds to the aforementioned empty-calories analogy. Randomized loot robs the game of some of its personality because there’s no “uber-loot” to quest for or an orderly progression of powerful equipment that keeps pace with the player’s development. As a result, there’s a lot less satisfaction with killing big bosses or getting each individual loot drop when most of it will be garbage. The randomized floor plans preclude a real sense of “place.” The player travels through London districts with fascinating names like “Cheapside” and “Mansion House,” but upon entering them find yet another collection of generic sewers, maintenance tunnels or randomized streets with eight different copies of the same roofless English pub. The difference is even starker during the far more enjoyable set-piece story battles that take place in places like Piccadilly Circus or the Tower of London. Since they never change, the designers went all out and create a real feeling that, yes, the player is fighting in the ruins of London.

This character was over level 100 and he was able to kill a Dragon in the game, that has handed me my ass 2moons online money on many occasions. So now I’m starting to think that solo could be possible. I’m sure someone will find a way.

What, if any, form of regulations will in place to reduce users from experience a ‘negative’ game experience, e.g. due to griefing and/or open PKing. Will the game be an open PvP world or will zones be put in buy 2moons gold place to allow players to level before ‘fending for themselves’?

We will keep PvP to zones. I wish Acclaim would let me hire GM griefers. These are people that just grief the griefers with Admin account power. Seriously though, we are lucky this game is already a hit in Koreaas they have already worked out (or already dealt with) much of the kinds of issues we will experience.

I simply want real useful feedback, not just opinions. “This is too hard” would be a comment a regular tester would make, a designer tester would say “This spell needs it’s range increased by about 25%”. Two very different approaches to testing. (Opinion vs Solution.)

Its appears that as player level increases the AI of enemy NPC’s will continue to get more aggressive and the “Bring a Friend” code will ensure high level zones would be extremely treacherous for 2moons hacks a solo player. As such will grouping be a requirement at upper levels or will players still have zones that will allow them to solo on their own?

Turning away from his body, Fellan sees the Captain just before walks through his new air-like form. Seeing his father being dragged from the room, Fellan turns around towards the Captain as he starts to yell out words that just don’t seem to come. Knowing his lips are moving yet hearing no sound, Fellan is angered more than ever. Again he tries to talk, again nothing except that of the faint circling wind sound comes. Moving for the Captain now, Fellan lashes out blow after mighty blow into and through his head.

At that moment, Fellan looked to his father for explanation, and then feels his head get pushed back.

Inside the barracks now, the guards stop short of entering the Captains room. Fellan turns to look at the guard with his arm under his left shoulder, “So what’s this all about?”

Turning to see the guards he asks, “What for?”

Finding him just outside of the barracks lying in the dirt, Fellan moves next to him. Seeing his father like this pains him so much and he begins to feel impossibly lighter than ever before. He sees his father pushing himself off the ground and standing to face the guards now repositioned in front of the barracks doors. Then watches as his father moves in on them and they come out to meet his attack. In a matter of seconds his father had put his fist so hard into one guard’s nose that his body was laying on the ground while the guard stood looking at Fellan. Then with a sideswipe his father put the side of his fist into the other guards head just as hard, but only knocking him to the ground, and never losing sight of his goal, he then went inside the barracks.

Grabbing him by the arms the two guards start pulling him forward as they say, “Just come with us.” Without a struggle, Fellan let the guards take him as they pulled, not wanting to disobey the Captain or his guards, after all, his father was once part of the military group.

Dropped to the ground outside the barracks, Sylex can do nothing but lie there, unbelieving what has just happened. The guards shout things at him but he can not hear them. Thinking of his son, and what he should have done, face in the dirt, Sylex feels rage pour over him. Never has the warrior felt such undeniable pain and regret. Then thoughts of his son pour over him in flashes as if Sylex was the one dieing and that of his son’s life was flashing before his eyes. — After the useless rage Fellan displayed against the Captain, he left the barracks in search of his father.

For just a moment, a second at the most, Fellan looks about the throne and the blackness all around him, then again blackness and nothingness overcomes him and he awaits his next destination.

Just as he gets the words out, from behind the door in front of him he hears, “Bring him in.” The doors open from the inside and the guards at his arms start pulling him forward. Directly in front of him he sees his father, 12 feet behind his father sits the Captain, and to each side of the room their stands many guards. Confused by all this, Fellan looks to his father as the guards walk him past, “Father, what is going on?”

One second held in place by force, the next feeling a release, Fellan steps back and watches his body fall to the ground as the room around him takes on a colorless appearance. For seconds, unable to understand what is going on, Fellan is in a daze, not noticing the commotion in the room as his father is rushed by the many guards from the left and the right. He can hear nothing, except a faint whooshing that sounded like wind, but had an eerie quality. As his eyes start to adjust to this new world of blacks, whites, and grays, Fellan sees the captain kneeling next to his father. Without thinking he takes a direct path towards them and walks right through the Captains desk. Looking down as it happens; Fellan throws his arms up and turns about as he comes out of the other side of the desk, still unable to get a grip on what is happening. Then seeing his body on the ground for a second time, Fellan realizes, like a hard slap to the face, he is dead.

“The Captain would like to see you,” Fellan hears from behind.

Trying to move to follow his father, Fellan found that he could no longer do so. He looked at his body and noticed it was fading away. For minutes he stood there, unable to do anything but watch the door and watch as the dead guard struggled with his new reality. Then the door burst open and out came his father, blood over his entire body, and carrying Fellan’s physical form. Fading more now, he watched as his father carried him away and out of site towards their home. Wondering what new surprises death would bring with this fading away of his self, Fellan sees a girl coming from the opposite direction that his father only just left. He knows this girl, he tries to speak her name, but no words would come. She walks up to the door of the barracks and looks at the guards at the foot of the door then turns and looks out from the barracks as she goes inside. She is beautiful and Fellan finds her face a fitting last sight of this fading world.
